Mr. Faustin Mgendi - Chairman
Faustin is the founder and chairperson of the Board of the Coast Hospice. He is an accountant by profession holds Bachelor of Commerce Accounting option from Day Star University, currently pursuing MBA at Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI) and also has 8 years of experience with Hospice Care. Faustin first hand experience with Hospice care begun when his mother sort palliative care. Faustin’s mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996. Being the first born, the responsibility of caring for his mother lay on him. His mother courageously accepted her terminal illness and decided not to go for surgery and instead opted to pursue palliative care. Faustin’s mother lived in Mombasa, but since there was no palliative care provider in Mombasa, she had to travel to Nairobi and in 1997 became a patient of the Nairobi Hospice.
That was the beginning of his involvement with Hospice care. Faustin’s mum was a Nairobi Hospice patient until she succumbed to breast cancer on 28th August 2000. In 2001, Faustin sought to bring hospice care closer to the people in Coast Province. Like Faustin’s mother other terminally ill patients from the Coast Province seeking palliative care, had to travel all the way to Nairobi. With an idea and a heart to add peace to the days of terminally ill patients, he recruited a palliative care team comprising of a doctor, clinical officer and nurse from the Coast General Provincial Hospital in Mombasa.
Faustin raised funds to allow the team to go for Palliative care training for health care professionals at the Nairobi Hospice. With the help of Hospice Care Kenya and other individual donors, the Coast Hospice was established. Faustin is also a founder member of the KEHPCA board and is the current Treasurer. He also works full time as an Enforcement Officer with the National Social Security Fund.
